The League of Women Voters of Utah welcomes the Cache Valley League-at-Large (LAL). The Cache Valley LAL will carry out the mission of empowering voters and defending democracy in the Cache community with a small but committed group of members. As the membership grows the LAL can seek to become a full league. In the meantime the League of Women Voters of Utah takes on the administrative functions, allowing Cache LAL to focus on registering voters, getting out the vote, educating voters, having forums for your community, and growing their membership.

DECEMBER

The Cache Valley LVW conducted a ranked choice poll to determine the top issues for the group. Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) was the top issue selected. As such, the December meeting was devoted to learning more about this topic. Other top choices included district voting vs. at large voting, as well as water and growth issues in Cache Valley. These topics will be addressed in coming meetings.

At the December meeting, Taylor Morgan from the nonprofit organization Utah Ranked Choicer Voting spoke to the group about a pilot program on RCV implemented across Utah. Overall, a majority of participants in the study found RCV easy to use, and they liked the process. One benefit of RCV is that it eliminates the need for primaries.

Jess Bradfield, the Cache County Clerk/Auditor, presented a contrasting point of view on RCV. He acknowledged some benefits of RCV such as its lower cost, and its clear threshold for the winner. Nonetheless, he noted that in his experience, it was a confusing process for the elderly; overcounting is a problem; results take longer to release; and spot audits are difficult to complete. He suggested the use of approval voting which allows voters to select all the candidates they like as an alternative to both RVC and traditional voting methods. Taylor noted that he has no objections to approval voting, but that the Utah Legislature has endorsed and commended the pilot program for RCV, but has voted against supporting a pilot program for approval voting.
