This has been quite a month! As a nation, we are witnessing a robust 100-day campaign with voters focused on the issues. In Utah, the League of Women Voters is celebrating a unanimous victory from the Supreme Court on our redistricting case, and another majority win that blocks the near-total abortion ban for now.

How did we get here? The Utah Constitution gives citizens the right to alter or reform their government, and that is exactly what Proposition 4 did. When the legislature threw out maps from the independent redistricting commission, they violated our constitutionally protected right. In other words, Prop 4 was protected from unfettered legislative amendment, repeal, or replacement. We have been looking forward to returning to the District Court to continue advocating for fair boundaries.

That said, the legislature seems poised to go into special session in another effort to maintain their hold on power. We do not know if they will support a constitutional amendment or simply make the initiative process more difficult.

You know your legislators. You have their ear. They need to hear from you, their constituents, about this unwise move.

The Let Utah Vote Coalition, to which we belong, is making it easy for you to contact your legislators. Link to contact form.

Tell them the ability for citizens to reform our government isn't just a privilege—it's one of the most fundamental rights granted to us by our state constitution.

Finally, stay tuned for an important webinar explaining the constitutional amendments affecting education funding. Save the date for September 9 at 6 p.m. More information to come.

Thank you, as always, for your work defending democracy.
