Questions

The League of Women Voters has made every effort to present accurately the candidates' responses as they were submitted.

1. If elected, what two things do you hope to accomplish as a U.S. Congressman for the people of Utah?

Bring media attention to waste, fraud and criminal activity within the federal government.  Cut federal spending.

2. The national debt can be reduced by reducing spending or increasing taxes. What actions would you support to reduce the debt?

History has shown time and time again that cutting the marginal tax rate, increases revenues flowing into the federal government.  Raising tax rates ("raising taxes") burdens the economy, and results in fewer revenues.

Spending must be cut, and tax rates reduced to a level that maximizes the productive enterprises of the overall economy.

That's the only way out of the 11 Trillion Dollar hole that has been left to us by the prior 40 years of excessive federal spending.

3. How would you address the following issues?

  • Quality health care for all Americans
The reason America had the best health care on the planet was not due to federal government management -- it arose from the free market innovations in technology, drug company R&D and the personal care provided by physicians.

As medical care has been increasingly socialized by central federal planning, quality has greatly diminished.  What did we not learn from the Soviet system?

I do not want the federal government managing my doctor's decisions.  I fear we are headed for the same "quality" of health care that our government is able to provide in public education, infrastructure, and the DMV.
  • Energy resource development and clean air
Free market innovation brought us electricity and gasoline.  Can you imagine if those were invented only today?  The government would regulate them to death -- too dangerous for consumers.  Hidden away in Black budgets for "national security."

Innovation in energy will come only from the competitive marketplace, never from central government planning.

Polluters of all kinds should be sued in the courts, required to pay for the damage they cause.
  • Water development and conservation
US water supplies will have to come, as they do in other parts of the world today, from desalinization plants on our shorelines.

Conservation will occur as a natural result of increasing prices until desalinization becomes economical.
  • Short-term and long-term goals in Iraq and the Middle East
Get our troops out now.  Stop sending foreign aid.  Stop importing oil.  Defend our nation at home.  We cannot prevent wars there, but we can drain our national resources, especially the lives of an entire generation of young men and women trying.
  • Immigration
End welfare for immigrants.  The US cannot afford to give every human being on the planet free health care, housing, education, transportation, food.  We can bankrupt ourselves trying, or we can recognize that the American Dream was one not based on the guarantee of an easy life, but the promise of having a fair chance to make it on one's own.

End socialism, then open the borders to all tyranny fleeing, freedom loving people on the planet.  Over time, and with generous moderation in numbers per year, give everyone who desires it, and is free of a criminal past, and is in good health, a chance at the American dream.

We must allow immigrants to come to America, or our industries will continue to move overseas seeking cheep labor.

This does us far more harm than good.
