Action Alert
HJR5 - Joint Resolution on Clean Air, sponsored by Representative Carol Moss will be debated in the House Wednesday, Feb 17 at 10:30
Please ask your Representative to vote yes to discourage unnecessary idling of motor vehicles.
HJR5 encourages Utahns to eliminate unnecessary idling so they can:
- Protect public health and the environment
- Reduce exhaust that can cause lung damage, respiratory problems and heart disease and exacerbate asthma and allergies, lead to lung and other cancers, damage plans and soil and reduce visibility.
- Children and the elderly are most likely to be adversely affected.
- Reduce air pollution
- Idling diesel-fueled engines release carbon monozide, nitrogen oxide, volatile organic compounds and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.
- Idling, gas-fueled engines release hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and precursors to ground level ozone.
- Conserve fuel
- Typical vehicles burn up to a gallon of fuel for every hour of idling.
- Protect motor vehicle performance
- Unwarranted idling can cause excessive engine wear and contaminate spark plugs and engine oil.
