Action Alert

HJR5 - Joint Resolution on Clean Air, sponsored by Representative Carol Moss will be debated in the House Wednesday, Feb 17 at 10:30

Please ask your Representative to vote yes to discourage unnecessary idling of motor vehicles.

HJR5 encourages Utahns to eliminate unnecessary idling so they can:

  • Protect public health and the environment
  • Reduce exhaust that can cause lung damage, respiratory problems and heart disease and exacerbate asthma and allergies, lead to lung and other cancers, damage plans and soil and reduce visibility.
  • Children and the elderly are most likely to be adversely affected.
  • Reduce air pollution
  • Idling diesel-fueled engines release carbon monozide, nitrogen oxide, volatile organic compounds and greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide.
  • Idling, gas-fueled engines release hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide, nitrogen oxides, carbon dioxide and precursors to ground level ozone.
  • Conserve fuel
  • Typical vehicles burn up to a gallon of fuel for every hour of idling.
  • Protect motor vehicle performance
  • Unwarranted idling can cause excessive engine wear and contaminate spark plugs and engine oil.
